Universitas Negeri Malang and Universiti Malaya Plan 5-Year Collaborative Research in Special and Inclusive Education

Kuala Lumpur, October 23-24, 2024 – A delegation from Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) visited Universiti Malaya’s Faculty of Education to formalize a five-year collaborative research partnership in the fields of special and inclusive education. This partnership aims to foster the development of cutting-edge educational tools and methodologies for students with special needs, blending the research strengths of both institutions.

The visit began on October 23 with a warm welcome from Prof. Dr. Loh Sau Cheong, who introduced the significance of the partnership for both universities. Dr. Ediyanto, the head of the delegation from Universitas Negeri Malang, provided an overview of the university’s ongoing research projects. These projects aim to enhance educational experiences for students with disabilities, using advanced technological solutions and inclusive teaching strategies. The initiative aligns with the shared mission of both institutions to improve access to education for all learners.

During the visit, several research topics were highlighted as central to the partnership. Dr. Ahsan Romadlon Junaidi introduced a project focusing on Emotion Expression for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, which explores the development of assistive technologies to support emotional communication for children with autism. Muchamad Irvan, M.Pd., presented research on Machine Learning for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, aimed at creating personalized, adaptive learning environments through artificial intelligence. Sinta Yuni Susilawati, M.Pd., Ph.D., discussed her work on Assessment in Inclusive Classrooms for Students with Hearing Impairment, with the goal of developing tools that facilitate equitable assessment in inclusive settings.

Further contributions came from Dimas Arif Dewantoro, M.Pd., who is researching Collaborative Learning Strategies using Universal Design for Learning, aiming to create flexible and accessible learning environments for diverse students. Dr. Ediyanto presented an innovative project on Artificial Intelligence for Sign Language, which focuses on developing AI-based sign language translators to improve communication for students with hearing impairments. Lastly, Dr. Wiwik Dwi Hastuti introduced research on Learning for Students with Physical Disabilities, focusing on enhancing engagement and accessibility through innovative educational technologies.

In addition to these presentations, Prof. Dr. Loh Sau Cheong from Universiti Malaya highlighted her own research in the use of Augmented Reality in Supporting Emotional and Social Skills for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Prof. Loh’s expertise in teacher efficacy and assistive technology played a pivotal role in driving the collaboration, as her work aligns with the goals of creating technology-driven, inclusive learning environments​.

Dr. Ahmad Shamsuri Muhamad, a senior lecturer and rehabilitation counselor, contributed by discussing his research on Rehabilitation Counseling for Individuals with Disabilities. His work focuses on providing psychological support and career development for visually impaired students, further enriching the collaborative research agenda between the two universities​.

Throughout the two-day visit, both universities engaged in detailed discussions on research methodologies and data collection strategies, ensuring the success of these initiatives. The collaboration is designed to generate impactful outcomes that can be implemented both locally and globally, with an emphasis on sustainability and scalability. Dr. Ediyanto expressed optimism about the partnership, stating, “This collaboration represents a significant leap forward for both universities. By integrating our expertise, we are paving the way for more inclusive education systems that truly cater to the diverse needs of students with disabilities.”

Looking forward, both institutions committed to regular evaluations of their research progress, ensuring that their collaboration yields meaningful results. The partnership also opens the door to further academic exchanges, joint conferences, and workshops aimed at enhancing the competencies of educators working in inclusive education. The partnership is poised to make a lasting contribution to the future of special and inclusive education across Southeast Asia and beyond.

With this five-year agreement, Universitas Negeri Malang and Universiti Malaya are positioned to lead the way in research and innovation in special and inclusive education, offering new hope and opportunities for students with special needs. The collaboration emphasizes the role of technology, particularly artificial intelligence and machine learning, in creating more accessible and effective educational environments. This partnership marks the beginning of a new chapter in the pursuit of educational equity and inclusion for all learners
